儘管2015年的二月在日曆上看起來排列非常齊整,但是每一年二月都是十二個月份中的矮子。這個缺少天數,這個瘋狂的日曆,這個古怪的年曆,就如現代的眾多文化現象一樣,都是羅馬人的錯。那為什麼二月份有28天,有時是29天呢?
羅慕路斯是羅馬神話中羅馬市的奠基人,羅馬的第一位國王,就遇到了一個問題。伴隨著數量不斷增加的節日、宴會、軍事儀式和宗教慶典。為了記錄,羅馬人需要一部曆法來管理這些事物。古代的天文學家,他們對於時間所作的精確記錄,只是對春、秋分和冬、夏至之間的時間。但自然在天空中已經給予人類容易方便的圖標,來記錄時間的軌跡。所以其他文明一樣,早期的羅馬,也漸漸廢除了陰曆。羅馬共和國的曆法是10個月,每月30或31天不等,3月份開始,12月份結束。今天我們仍能夠看到那部曆法的一些痕跡,問題是,一年中少了許多天和季節不對應。羅馬人冬天很忙,忙著去算那額外的61.25天,他們就以春分前的第一次新月作為一年的開始,說實話,這樣的計算也不算差。只是你不去關心,3月到12月之間的日期。
